Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza organisers 'know event must change'

The chairman of Llandudno’s Victorian Extravaganza has said changes will need to be made to the event next year.

Chris Williams, who took on the role as chairman in December 2016, has said there will be a fairer balance between a modern and Victorian event.

The three-day festival was criticised by local business owners after organisers had allowed burger vans and other food outlets to set up outside food businesses.

Daily Post readers also voiced their concern that the festival may have had its day.

Mr Williams said: “I’m glad it’s all come out. We need to reform, reorganise and to be Victorian.”

“We have to deal with the in house problems first and the wheels are already in motion for next year.”

“I want to see all the shops get involved and to get out onto the streets like a market with local shops and charities.”

“It is a slow process and was never going to happen this year.”

Earlier in the week, Morgan Austin who owns Johnny Dough’s Pizzas had said he was £4,000 down on takings because of the annual festival.

Mr Williams added: “Businesses need to realise the knock-on effect on the economy and people who will keep coming back.”

“We’ve had messages on Facebook from people saying they’re already booking their hotel for next year.”

Thousands of people flocked to the seaside town to enjoy the fairground rides, magicians, street performers and classic Punch and Judy.

Revellers from as far as New Zealand and Canada came out to experience the 31st event over the Bank Holiday weekend.

He continued: “Next year there will be a better balance and it will make it cheaper for families.”

“I do agree the event does need a shape up and as a team we want to make the town proud.”

“It is very hard to keep some things going and does involve more than people realise.”

Mr Williams had previously said he wished more business owners would help the volunteer led committee who organise the annual event.

“I’m glad businesses are listening and we can work together with each other.”
