Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza and Transport Festival triumph

This year’s Victorian Extravaganza and Transport Festival was a huge success as thousands of people flocked to Llandudno to enjoy the three-day event.

Despite the dull weather and grey cloud over the town yesterday on the final day the crowds kept coming.

Magicians, street performers, local singers and a classic Punch and Judy show entertained spectators while children played on a host of fairground rides dotted around the seaside town.

Crowds waved and cheered as the daily parade passed through the Queen of Welsh resorts at 1pm before the Victorian Dress Competition was held on the promenade later in the afternoon.

Valerie Hailwood, 60, from Rhos on Sea who has been attending the extravaganza since it began 31-years-ago was dressed in a traditional style, long Victorian gown.

She said: “I have been coming to the event as a spectator since it first began but I have been dressing in costume for the last ten years.

“I love the atmosphere that comes with this event – it’s the first event of the year that brings so many people into the town.

“Although it was dull this morning, today has been the best day weather wise – it has been a very enjoyable weekend.

“The only thing that has disappointed me this year is that there aren’t many children dressed up in Victorian costumes. This year we only saw two children get up on stage to take part in the best dressed competition.

“It is the younger generation that will keep this fantastic event going so I do hope to see more next year.”

Classic car enthusiasts and lovers of vintage vehicles filled Bodafon Fields all weekend where the Transport Festival was being held.

Phil and Wendy Horsley, two classic-car enthusiasts who were also dressed in Victorian-style clothing sat on the prom all weekend showing off their 1927 light-blue Citroen.

The couple who take part in the procession each year with their vintage car normally carry either the Mayor or Queen Victoria.

Mr Horsley who wore a black suit and tie with a black top hat, said: “We have been parked on the prom all weekend letting people have a look insde the car.

“We go all over the country with our classic cars but we always come back to this event every year.”

Mrs Jones from Conwy who did not want her first name published said it is important for locals to support the extravaganza.

She said: “There’s been a lovely atmosphere in Llandudno this weekend, I’m amazed so many people are here.

“It’s been a brilliant day out for the whole family and the kids have had a really good day going on all the rides.

“I think it’s important that locals support these kind of events – if they don’t they won’t continue.”

Emma Davies, 33, from Conwy, added: “The kids have really enjoyed it, it’s a great event and it’s been a lovely day for it. We will definitely be coming back again next year.”
