Anglesey A55 link road work to re-start next week

Work on the latest phase of a £11m link road at Anglesey’s county town is to start next week.

The first two sections of the project, which cost £4m, were opened in March by Economy and Infrastructure Secretary Ken Skates, who said the development would ultimately lead to job opportunities for local young people.

But taking almost a year to complete, the local authority has warned there will be some disruption and delay to road users, although no roads will be closed.

The planned completion date for the latest phase is March 2018, with work commencing next Tuesday.

The project is aimed to provide a direct connection for Llangefni’s Coleg Menai campus with the A55 expressway by avoiding much of the town centre traffic.

The existing section of the road goes as far as the Llangefni Industrial Estate, with the upcoming phase of works including a new roundabout on the A5114 on the outskirts of the town.

When all four sections are completed, it will directly link the college campus to the A5114 at the Lon Glanhwfa/Industrial Estate Road junction.

Anglesey’s Head of Highways, Waste and Property, Dewi Williams, said, “We’re pleased to have secured the funding needed to complete yet another section of this important project.

“I’d like to thank the Welsh Government for its continued support for the link road project and for recognising its strategic importance in the wider context for Anglesey.”

Alun Griffiths (Contarctors) Ltd. will again undertake the latest phase of construction after winning the tender.

Huw Owen (Contracts Manager) of Alun Griffiths, said: “We’re looking forward to continuing our positive working partnership with the county council having successfully completed the first two sections of the link road.

“We have an impressive record in delivering infrastructure projects of this nature as well as employing and utilising local labour and goods.”

A spokesman for Anglesey Council said: “The new link road will help secure significant economic benefits for Llangefni and Anglesey as a whole.

“This will enable the growth and expansion of the Grwp Llandrillo Menai Pencraig campus and provide improved access to the Enterprise Zone sites.

“Additionally, the scheme will improve linkages to the A55 and help overcome traffic constraints in Llangefni.”
