Aldi names Llangollen 'ghost supermarket' opening date…and work steps up on Rhuddlan site

Aldi has named the opening date for the ‘ghost supermarket’ in Llangollen.

The supermarket was originally completed on schedule at the end of 2015 but with no occupier to move in after the Sainsbury’s chain withdrew from the project.

Last May, the Daily Post revealed that Aldi and Home Bargains were tipped to share the large vacant unit , dubbed the ‘ghost supermarket’.

Now Aldi has confirmed the opening date for the store will be Thursday July 13. Home Bargains is set to open on Saturday July 8.

They will create around 100 jobs when they open.

Meanwhile work is pushing ahead on the Aldi supermarket in Rhuddlan.

That site is due to open later this autumn – creating another 50 jobs.

The good news is that the chain is the best paying supermarket group in the UK. The minimum rate is now £8.53 an hour, compared to the UK minimum wage for over-25s of £7.50.
